Batam-weight boxer Atanus Mugerwa won a gold medal at the 2016 Eindhoven Cup in Netherlands.

Fred Kavuma, the Uganda Boxing Federation (UAF) spokesman told URN on Thursday that Mugerwa beat Turkey's Cokcek Ibrahim to win the final. Sulaiman Segawa settled for a silver medal in the lightweight category after falling to La Cruz Enrico from the host country.

“This is very good news because we sent four boxers to use this event to prepare ahead of the 2016 Olympic Games qualifier in Azerbaijan. Winning two medals is good and now they have remained in Netherlands to prepare better,” explained Kavuma.

The Eindhoven Boxing Cup is Netherlands' largest Boxing event which ended on Monday at Hotel Eindhoven. The event was organised by the Noble Art of Boxing Foundation, under supervision of the Dutch Boxing Association.

He explained that they are looking for money from the government to facilitate the team's training in Netherlands. The team is camped at professional boxer Andaman Daku's residence.

The other boxers training in Netherlands include; Nasser Bukenya (Walter-weight), Willy Kyakonye (heavyweight) and Fazil Juma (light-fly weight). Last month Ronald Serugo and Kenneth Katende qualified for the Olympics during the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) African Olympic Qualification event held in Yaounde, Cameroon.
