The Mukono Resident District Commissioner, Fatuma Ndisaba Nabitaka over the weekend cut short the belated international youth day celebrations citing misconduct by the youth leaders.

It came after the youths echoed provocative choruses complaining about the district’s failure to fund their activities and events during the youth day celebrations held at Ntaawo Youth Skills Development Centre in Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality.

The conduct of the youth leaders did not go down well with the Nabitaka.  When she stood to deliver her speech, she blamed the youth leaders for turning the celebrations into a platform for complaints and quarrelling.

Her statements drew protests from the youth leaders, who heckled the RDC as she continued with her speech. She accused the youth leaders of indiscipline and undermining their leaders.

“You will invite us next time and we don’t come. Then you complain that we shun your functions. If you are to behave in this same manner, don’t invite me next time.”

Florence Birungi, the Mukono District female youth councilor, said that the district allocated youth activities only Shillings 4M for the entire financial year, something which did not go down well with them.

“We have been dismayed by the fact that later we were told that the district had no money and instead reduced our vote to Shillings 2M channelled through the district executive committee. Unfortunately, they also failed to deliver the Shillings 2M.”

Mukono District LC V Chairperson, Rev. Dr. Peter Bakaluba Mukasa denied any wrongdoing, saying that as the head of the district executive committee he was not involved in the planning of the function.

“I was only shocked when I turned up this morning and I was told that the district had not made any contribution. It has been a very big disappointment, how can a function like this miss food and drinks?”

The Central Region Youth Member of Parliament, Agnes Kirabo noted that although youth in different districts she represents face the problem of underfunding, Mukono district is worse given the fact that even the little money allocated was not availed to the youths.
