President of Yoweri Museveni has recognized local scientists for successful breakthroughs in what he described as landmark discoveries in their works.

Museveni said in recent times, the country has enhanced its capacity to develop and manufacture vaccines and medicines for some of the dangerous conditions in both humans and livestock, which have bothered the country for a long time.

In his address at the 44th Tarehe Sita commemorations in Kyotera District, Museveni highlighted that through local scientific research trials, the country discovered a cure for coronavirus Disease, intermittent coughs, influenza, and a Vaccine against ticks in livestock.

Specifically, Museveni applauded research scientists at the National Agricultural Research Organization, Busitema University and Kazire Herbals Company Limited.

For their respective discoveries, he said they will be rewarded with both medals and cash in appreciation of their efforts.

"Our people at Busitema University have discovered a medicine which can cure coronavirus disease and other viruses that have been a bother to us," he noted.

According to Museveni, the people who took these medicines recovered four days earlier than those who were using other medicines.

Besides the rewards, he pledged that the government is committed to establishing a high-tech laboratory, as a requirement for the scientists to harness their research experiments and support commercial production of their discoveries.
