President Yoweri Museveni has re-appointed Colonel Shaban Bantariza the deputy Executive Director Uganda Media Center. Bantariza's reappointment comes barely a month after he was acquitted of fraud charges by the General Court martial.
Tamale Mirundi, the Presidential Press Secretary says Bantariza is expected to work anytime soon. He explains that Museveni reappointed Bantariza because the army court failed finds him guilty of the charges that were brought against him.
Bantariza was dragged before the military court martial on accusations of attempting to defraud government when he allegedly received a tractor registration number UAN 652Z and its accessories from Akamba (U) Limited as a donation from the Finance ministry but altered documents to indicate that he had bought it at 67 million Shillings.
Prosecution told court that Bantariza committed the offense on February 3, 2010 during his tenure as the director of the National Leadership Institute. However, in his ruling on April 14, 2015 Major General Levi Karuhanga, the chairman of the General Court Martial acquitted the former army spokesperson saying prosecution had failed to prove the allegations against him.
He also said the prosecution had failed to produce a witness from the Finance Ministry to pin the accused during his trial. General Karuhanga also dismissed the prosecution evidence pinning Bantariza for employing high handed methods of administration and failing to adhere to principles of democracy which, prompted his juniors to write anonymous letters against him.
Ofwono Opondo, the Executive Director Media Center has welcomed the re-appointment of Bantariza. According to Ofwono, he has been working without deputy for long adding that the appointment of Bantariza will allow provide timely information on government activities.
