President Yoweri Museveni has called for improvement in the agricultural sector. Museveni noted that currently, the sector contributes less to country's development.

Museveni who presided over the 56th National Independence celebrations held at Kasasa Sub County in Kyotera district expressed concern that the agricultural sector has not developed at the same rate compared to other sectors despite its capacity to turn around the economy.

Museveni said that while the country's economy has registered reasonable improvement, the contribution from agriculture has been very little. He challenged technocrats and the local leaders to double their efforts towards improvement of the sector.

He said that the government will support the sector through rolling out irrigation schemes in different parts of the country.

In the 2018/19 national budget framework, the agriculture sector was allocated 892.9 billion shillings translating to about 4 percent of the total budget.

Museveni, on the other hand, observed the need to change the mindset of the rural communities and embrace commercial agriculture, which will improve their productivity.

He explained that many people are still stuck in the subsistence model of agriculture calling upon all leaders to de-campaign the practices in their respective areas.
