President Yoweri Museveni has urged the people of Oyam North to vote for Samuel Okello Engola, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate ahead of the by-elections.

Speaking at the last campaign rally in Iceme Town Council on Tuesday, Museveni praised the late Engola for his leadership, promotion of peace, and dedication to development.

He emphasized the need for a vibrant leader like Engola in Oyam North.

He said that being a son of the former legislator, there is a possibility that Engola Okello inherited good traits from his father and thus would make a good leader. Adding that if he performs otherwise then that will be his problem.

Rosemary Ssenide, the NRM's director for mobilization, expressed confidence in the party's victory in Oyam North and assured the president of their support.

During the rally, President Museveni also received three stanch leaders from the Uganda People's Congress (UPC) and district councilors who defected to NRM.

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine, the president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, campaigned for Daniel Okello, the NUP candidate, urging Oyam voters to choose an honest leader who will combat corruption and poverty.

“The Poverty and challenges that this government has put us in will end if you decide. The land grabbing here will end if you decide. The corruption here will end if you decide,” he said.

The by-election in Oyam North is scheduled for Thursday, July 6th, 2023, to fill the seat left vacant by the late Hon. Charles Okello Engola, who was murdered by his bodyguard.

Engola Okello, representing the NRM, is running against Dr. Eunice Apio Otuku of the Uganda People's Congress (UPC), Daniel Okello of the NUP, and Freddy Newton Okello of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).
