Museveni Directs Finance Ministry to Pay UGX 1.9 Trillion to Lango War Claimants

President Museveni has directed Ministry of Finance to expedite compensation of Lango war claimants.

The more than 700,000 claimants are demanding over 1.9 trillion shillings for their livestock lost during various insurgents in Lango sub-region since 1986.

Sam Engola, the NRM Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda who met President Museveni at his Country Home in Rwakitura on Monday says that President Museveni wants the compensation effected before the end of the 2018/2019 financial year.

According to Engola, President Museveni had summoned him and others from Lango to discuss matters regarding development and welfare of people of Lango.

"During our meeting, President Museveni directed Finance ministry to quickly find money from any source and ensure the payment of Livestock compensation is effected as soon as possible. "Engola said.

According to Engola, President Museveni directed Keith Muhakanizi, the Permanent Secretary of Finance Ministry and Secretary to Treasury to personally supervise and ensure the payment is made.

President's directive has excited some residents who have for years been waiting for compensation in vain.

"I am happy the President has finally ordered for the payment of our lost animals, I hope it will also be implemented as directed. Since we won the case, government had been silent about our quest for payment, “Joseph Ogwal, 72, a local resident of Oyam district said.

Ogwal is claiming for the payment of his 61 herds of cattle, 33 goats among others which he said were taken by security personnel in 1989.
