Museveni Joins Bushenyi-Ishaka By-election Campaigns

President Yoweri Museveni is expected in Bushenyi district later today as the campaigns for the Bushenyi-Ishaka municipality by-election gain momentum. The Bushenyi Municipality parliamentary seat fell vacant in April this year when the Court of Appeal nullified Basajjabalaba’s election victory on grounds that he bribed voters during the 2011 parliamentary elections.
President Yoweri Museveni is expected in Bushenyi district later today as the campaigns for the Bushenyi-Ishaka municipality by-election gain momentum.

According to Information and national guidance minister, Mary Karooro Okurut, Museveni will be in the district to campaign for NRM party candidate, Nasser Basajjabalaba.

Karoro, who is also the Bushenyi Woman MP, said the president will attend two main rallies at Ishaka trading center and Bushenyi Local government grounds.

Basajjabalaba is facing a stiff competition from Odo Tayebwa from the opposition Forum Democratic Change party.

The post of MP for Bushenyi Municipality fell vacant in April this year when the Court of Appeal nullified Basajjabalaba’s election victory on grounds that he bribed voters during the 2011 parliamentary elections.

The race also has two independents, Robert Bwarare and Ismail Kikurwe.

Voting will be held on Wednesday June 13.

The ruling NRM party has not performed well in the by-elections. Out of the four by-elections held since the February 2011 voting, NRM has won only one. They include among others Jinja Municipality East won by FDC's Paul Mwiru, Luweero woman MP won by DP's Irene Nabukenya and Busiro North where former vice president Gilbert Bukenya retained the seat.
