President, Yoweri Museveni has reiterated the need for irrigation, saying the country can no longer depend on rain-fed agriculture. He stated this during the State of the Nation Address at Serena Hotel on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Museveni, government has already completed designs for six irrigation schemes including Mobuku II, Doho II, Wadelai, Tochi, Rwengaju and Ngenge. He also said government is also working on the designs of 8 other irrigation schemes including Pabbo, Ongom, Biiso, Labori, Namalu, Musamya, Kibiimba and Matanda.

The country has in the past months experienced scorching heat leaving farmers and herdsmen crying foul. The prolonged drought also left millions of Uganda in urgent need of food aid resulting from crop failure.

In his address, Museveni noted that besides irrigation, there is need for separate financial support for individual farmers who don't benefit from government programs like Operation Wealth Creation.

Still on agriculture, Museveni further noted that working with industrialists, government is developing solar powered water pumps that can be used by individual farmers.

"I am looking forward to throwing away my diesel water pumps when the cheaper solar pumps are available.  I could then irrigate my pasture and crops. With the diesel pumps, I have confined myself to only filling the cattle dips." Museven said.
