Yoweri Museveni, the NRM Presidential candidate has promised to set up an industrial park in Mbarara and upgrade the municipality to a city. Museveni made the pledge at his campaign rally at Booma Grounds in Mbarara town on Tuesday evening.

He also promised to construct the long awaited modern market in Mbarara town to host over 3000 vendors currently operating in the condemned Mbarara central market. Museveni ordered Mbarara municipality to start relocating vendors from Mbarara central market immediately to another area to pave way for the redevelopment works.

He however, cautioned the local authorities against displacing vendors operating in the old market, when the new one is completed as the case has been in other areas such as Jinja, Wandegeya, Gulu and Lira. Museveni vowed to deal with the officials who have technically displaced vendors from the newly built markets and allocated their spaces to rich individuals.

Traders have welcomed Museveni's pledge to construct a modern market in Mbarara. Margaret Kisembo, a fresh food vendor in Mbarara Central market, says she has been struggling to protect her merchandise from destruction whenever it rains because of the sorry state of the market. She asks government to expedite the proposed construction of the modern market to save them from loses.

Happy Kiconco, another food vendor hopes the market construction will not be politicised like it has been in the past. According to Kiconco, government has repeatedly promised to upgrade Mbarara Central market since 2004, but to date nothing has been done.

Robert Kakyebezi, the NRM candidate for the Mbarara municipality mayoral seat, says the proposed elevation of the town to a city has been long overdue. According to Kakyebezi, the current development in the municipality needs to be taken to another level.
