Muteesa 1 Royal University in Masaka is struggling to make a mark in the education sector as its grapples with lack of basic learning aids. Muteesa 1 Royal University was established by Buganda kingdom in 2007. The university is found in Kirumba village Katwe-Butego division in Masaka municipality.

 

 

It was initially a National Teacher's College. Tension is mounting at Muteesa 1 Royal University following threats by students to strike over lack of basic services at the university. Currently, the university lacks water, the toilets have filled up and the compound is overgrown with bushes.

 

 

The university also lack sufficient equipment for practical lessons.  Currently, Mass communication and tailoring students share a single camera and tailoring machine respectively. The university has failed to implement the e-learning project that was launched two years ago.

 

 

Jessy Luumu, the Muteesa 1 Royal University Guild president, says they have given the Vice Chancellor Prof. Arthur Sserwanja and his administration one week to restore sanity at the university or else they resort to violence. He says the situation worsened when the vice chancellor relocated to Kakeeka campus in Kampala.

Lumu says they have had enough and want the university to fix the poor sanitation, secure learning equipment and remove asbestos sheets from their lecture rooms within one week.

Nuliat Nakitto is a third year Mass communication student at Muteesa 1 Royal University. She says they are struggling to carryout practical journalism assignment because of lack of recorders, cameras and a functional studio. According to Nakitto, despite petitioning the university administration nothing has been done.

Prof. Arthur Sserwanga, the Vice Chancellor of Muteesa 1 Royal University, says the university is struggling financially. He denies abandoning Masaka campus saying he simply spends most of the time in Kakeeka campus because it has more students and therefore more challenges.

Masaka campus has over 500 students, Mubende campus 80 students while Kakeeka campus has over 2000 students. According to Prof. Sserwanga, he decided to station at the Kampala campus after his doctors advised him not to drive for long hours following an accident a few months ago.

 

He says as a result, management appointed Florence Kirabo as the deputy vice chancellor in charge of Masaka campus. Prof. Sserwanga says they are making all efforts to provide the necessary services despite the financial squeeze.

 

 

According to Prof. Sserwanga, they operate on the tuition paid by students, which makes it hard for satisfy every student. Prof Sserwanga also says he decided to concentrate in Kampala where there are donor opportunities, adding that he is considering writing proposals to get funding to facilitate the university. He discloses that China has offered to facilitate Engineering students at the university.
