Bridge in Bunambutye Sub County in Bulambuli district as a result of heavy
Heavy rains have been
pounding the district for over a month now. Muyembe-Namalu-Nakapiripirit road is
an alternative route to Karamoja. The collapse of Chesebere Bridge has now forced travellers to use the longer Mbale-Soroti-Moroto
A group of youths have set up a makeshift bridge for
pedestrians and cyclists. Pedestrians and
motorcyclists using the makeshift bridge pay Shillings 1000 and 2000
respectively. John Nangai, a farmer, says he was on his way to Bulambuli Town
to buy herbicides for his tomato farm but found the bridge is no more.

Idd Chepsikor, whom our reporter found riding a motorcycle to Kapchorwa from
Kween District, accused youths in the area of taking advantage of the situation
to extort money from the road users in the name of helping them.
He asked the concerned authorities to
intervene and help those who are unable to pay for using the makeshift bridge.
Allan Ssempebwa, a Senior Communications Officer in Uganda National Roads
Authority told Uganda Radio Network that a team from the authority has already
inspected the broken bridge is working around the clock to erect a temporal
the bridge, as they wait for the road upgrade works to start.
He said they have created a diversion on
the road and asked road users to use Mbale Soroti road, saying construction of
the temporary bridge will take a week’s time.
