Mwenge North MP Lawrence Akugizibwe Loses Seat

In her ruling on Friday afternoon, Justice Henrietta Walayo said that the court was satisfied with the evidence that was produced by Muhumuza. In her judgment she accused the Electoral Commission for not compiling with the electoral laws.
The High Court in Fort Portal has nullified the election of Lawrence Akugizibwe as the Member of Parliament for Mwenge North constituency in Kyenjojo district.

The ruling is based on a petition filed by his main challenger David Muhumuza, an independent candidate in the February elections, demanding the nullification on grounds of intimidation and ballot stuffing.

Akugizibwe, the National Resistance Movement –NRM party candidate won the vote with 19,144 votes against Muhumuza's 18,426 votes.

Justice Henrietta Walayo ruled this afternoon that court was satisfied with the evidence that was produced by Muhumuza proving that the Electoral Commission failed to comply with electoral laws and that the voting was characterized by ballot staffing and use of underage voters, in favour of Akugizibwe.

Justice Walayo noted that the election officials in Mwenge North should not have looked on as ballot stuffing was taking place. The petition was dismissed with costs.

In another ruling, Justice Walayo dismissed a petition against Mwenge South MP, Aston Kajara.

Kajara's rival Vincent Mugisha sought to annul his election on grounds that the elections were characterized by bribery and intimidation.

But Justice Walayo ruled that the petitioner failed to prove any incident when voters were bribed or intimidated.
