At about 3am, many neighbourhoods in Nairobi erupted in cheers as news trickled out Kenya finally had a president-elect: Uhuru Kenyatta.

Vuvuzelas, bonfires, and car horns rent the air as Kenyans went out into the street to celebrate and dance away nearly a week of tension.

Kenya has been waiting since Monday to learn who will be her next president following the March general elections that saw eight candidates throw their hat in the ring.

The country has especially been on tenterhooks as the last presidential elections in December 2007 brought the country close to civil war.

The tension this time round was exacerbated by a new electronic electoral voting system that was supposed to make these elections free and transparent but failed to cope. The electronic system suffered many failures and the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission was forced to resort to manual counting of votes after all, delaying the whole process by an agonising five days.

This morning many businesses in Nairobi are yet to open shop as they await official announcement from the Kenya Electoral Commission the winner of the 2013 presidential elections.

Although not officially announced, Uhuru Kenyatta is set to become the third president of Kenya after he garnered 6,173,433 votes against CORD’s Raila Odinga’s 5,340,546 votes.

Uhuru managed to get 50.03% of the 12, 222,980 votes cast in the 291 constituencies.

To get more than 50 percent of the vote was crucial to avert a runoff. The threshold is stipulated in the Kenya 2010 constitution.
