Uganda's Halimah Nakaayi has qualified for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games after winning the 800m race Athletix Grand Prix Series in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Nakaayi recorded a time of 2:01.44 ahead of Glasgow 2014 bronze medalist Winnie Nanyondo who finished second. South Africa's Gena Lofstrand came third at the Ruimsig Stadium.

“ This is good news because Nakaayi has been working hard,” Dominic Otuchet, President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) told URN on Friday.

Uganda's 10,000m world silver medalist Joshua Cheptegei finished second in the 1500m race at the same Championship in South Africa with a time of 03:41.04. Kenya's George Manangoi won the race, while Ronald Musagala was fourth and Abel Sikowo a distant.

Nakaayi becomes Uganda's 13th athlete to qualify for the Commonwealth Games which will take place in April 4-15 in the Gold Coast City, Australia.
