Police in Nakaseke District have arrested a woman for allegedly setting her 16-year-old niece ablaze after accusing her of stealing Ugx 400,000.

The suspect, Selina Nalukwago, allegedly committed the act against Bridget Akello on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at around 6 p.m. at her residence in Kyondo village, Kapeeka Sub-County.

According to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima, preliminary investigations indicate that the money was stolen from Nalukwago’s home. Believing Akello was responsible, she reportedly reacted in anger, bought paraffin, doused her niece—who was fully dressed at the time—and set her on fire inside a locked room.

Neighbors noticed smoke coming from the house and forced the door open. They found Akello severely burned and rushed her to a nearby clinic for initial treatment. Due to her critical condition, she was referred to Nakaseke General Hospital and later transferred to Kiruddu National Referral Hospital in Kampala for advanced care.

Upon receiving information about the incident, police registered a case of attempted murder and arrested Nalukwago.
