On Monday, the body was driven to St Andrews Church Nakasongola for special prayers, and later, a council sitting was held at Nakasongola district headquarters to honor her work.
The Nakasongola District Council has paid tribute to Former District
Member of Parliament Margaret Komuhangi.
Komuhangi aged 54 years died in India where she was rushed after a long
illness and her body was flown back to Uganda on the weekend.
On Monday, the body was driven to St Andrew's Church
in Nakasongola town for special prayers, and later, a council sitting was held at Nakasongola
district headquarters to honour her work.
During the late evening Council sitting presided over by Deputy Speaker
Sarah Nakate, each councillor eulogized Komuhangi as a mentor, unifier, passionate about gender equality, transformer and dedicated leader.
Nakate eulogized Kmomuhangi for her contributions to education, health, road infrastructure, and the fight for gender equality, saying that it was
befitting for the council to hold a special sitting to honour her works.
Nakate added that she mentored many local leaders and
her legacy will live longer.
Sam Tingira the Vice Chairperson of Nakasongola District moved
a motion to honour Komuhangi for her dedicated service. This was seconded by
Adrian Kizza the District Councillor for Migyera town council.
Kizza explained that through her tenure Komuhangi helped to
construct schools, dams and health centres, especially in remote areas.
Kizza added that Komuhangi lobbied for several projects to
transform women through goat rearing and piggery farming, transforming several households.

town that during her tenure Komuhangi saved Ekitangaala Transformation High School from land grabbers and since then many children have studied from there.

Sam Kigula the LCV Chairperson of Nakasongola hailed Komuhangi
for lobbying funds that helped the district to open several access roads which
eased the movement of people and goods.
Kigula cited the Kirolo-Kigarambi road which was constructed through
Komuhangi support to enable the farmers to transport milk to the markets and ease the movement of
pupils to a local school.
He proposed that the road be named after Komuhangi in recognition of her contribution to the district. The Nakasongola County Member of Parliament Noah
Mutebi advised the council to consider naming her before a street in the town council in
consideration of her prominence rather than an earlier proposal for a road in the village.
The District council passed the resolution with amendments and
referred the matter to the Technical team for further discussion before
implementation.
Bernard Ssekyanzi Kirya the Budyebo County Member of
Parliament also eulogized Komuhangi as a unifier and focused on developing the area
which has made her stand out from other leaders in the district.
Kirya said that some leaders in the district have turned
against voters and caused unnecessary disunity in the areas which has hampered development.
Kirya asked the district leaders to emulate Komuhangi’s
legacy and stop promoting divisions among the residents.

Although the area Members of Parliament wrote to Parliament and
the Government asking that Komuhangi be accorded a befitting state burial, the
request wasn’t granted.
Nakasongola County Member of Parliament Noah Mutebi told the special council sitting
that like other leaders Komuhangi also deserved state burial for her significant contribution
to the area and the country during her tenure.
Mutebi said that however they are disappointed this wasn't granted which also happened in 2018 when they lost former Attorney General Peter Nyombi.
Komuhangi's body was later transferred to her matrimonial home located at Walusi village in Migyera
town council where she will be laid to rest on Tuesday.
Komuhangi aged served as District Woman MP on the National
Resistance Movement ticket from 2001 - 2002 before her elections were
successfully challenged by former MP Grace Tubwita.
Komuhangi bounced back in Parliament where she served from 2011 to 2021 before
she was defeated in general elections.
