Believers attending mass in Namugongo
Liturgy Celebrations are underway in Namugongo in commemoration of the annual martyrs' day pilgrimage.

The day is commemorated on June 3 every year in honor of the martyrdom of 45 young men who converted to Christianity between 1885 and 1887.  The conversions annoyed the then King of Buganda, Mwanga II who ordered that they are burnt to death.

Namirembe Diocese with a consortium of 300 churches is leading the mass at Nakiyanja-the Anglican Church shrine. The service is led by Venerable Isaac Membe Kijjambu from Luzira Archdeaconry together with Venerable Canon Jonathan Kisawuzi.  The days sermon will be delivered by a visiting preacher; Rt Rev Samuel Chukwudi Ezeofor from Ogbaru-Nigeria.

The day's theme; Happy are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake- for theirs is the Kingdom of God is based on the biblical teachings in Mathew 5:10.

Meanwhile at the Catholic Shrine, the liturgy celebration is led by Bishop Joseph Antony Zziwa of Kiyinda-Mityana diocese under the theme; “The Truth Will Make You Free" lifted from the book of John 8:32.

Today's celebrations has pilgrims from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC, Rwanda, Nigeria, South Sudan, Malawi, United States, Mexico, Italy, Australia, Singapore, South Africa, Ireland and Canada.
