Namutamba Police Arrests Seven Armed Robbers

It is alleged that, on Monday, the suspects intercepted Kenneth Wetaka’s car, Fuso registration number; UBD 415S which was carrying 10 tons of sugar valued at 131.6 million Shillings, undressed him and fled off with his property.

Police in Namutumba district have arrested seven suspected armed robbers who allegedly stole 10 tons of sugar from a businessman.

It is alleged that, on Monday, the suspects intercepted Kenneth Wetaka’s car, Fuso registration number; UBD 415S which was carrying 10 tons of sugar valued at 131 million Shillings, undressed him and fled with his property.

The suspects include Khalid Wanyenya, Bilali Alumansi, Irene Namatovu, Hakim Kakaire, Angella Nanoba, Suleiman Weguli, and Abdullah Munubi.

The suspects are reported to have pitched camp in Busia district where they had opened up a wholesale shop and selling sugar to Kenya and some neighbouring districts.

Wetaka told journalists that, he was beaten up and left naked.

 “I was badly humiliated when these people beat me up, tore my clothes and forced me to run naked on the highway without looking back,” he said. 

The Busoga East Police Spokesperson, James Mubi says that police embarked on investigations early last week and managed to recover two UPDF uniforms, one pair of traffic police uniforms, a pepper spray, Wetaka’s clothes and 14 bags of sugar.

Mubi further says that the suspects will be charged with aggravated robbery, kidnapping and conspiracy to commit a felony.
