Napak District has passed resolutions that may help prevent the spread of the Hepatitis E virus that has hit the district in recent months.

At a crisis meeting held at Kangole Town Council on Saturday, the residents together with district authorities agreed that all households should have a pit-latrine. Also those involved in brewing of local beer should observe proper hygiene among others.

Ilukol Andrew Reus, the assistant District health Officer, says improved sanitation especially digging pit latrines is one way of controlling the spread of the disease. He blames open defecation which is widely practiced in the area for the spread of the disease. He says the district was not stamping out the making of local brew but advised the brewers to ensure containers used are clean.

Alfred Muyange, who spoke on behalf of the Resident District Commissioner, said that they are going to reinforce the police, health officers and other stakeholders to mobilize and sensitize the locals on the Hepatitis E. He explained that anyone who will not comply with the resolutions passed will face the law.
