Nasser Ashraf has been elected the NRM party’s flag bearer for Mayor Southern Division, Jinja City.

Ashraf, the current Jinja central east parish garnered 8,256 votes to defeat Nelson Mawanda who polled 1,076 votes.

In Northern Division, Steven Wante, the former Bugembe town council chairperson emerged winner with 7,515 votes to defeat his closest rival Hamis Kiganira, the former Mafubira sub-county chairperson, with 6254 votes.

Other contenders in the Jinja north race who include; Juma Muyita and Ronald Wambuzi scored 5,940 and 1,748 votes respectively.

Muyita’s supporters tried to attack Wante whom they accused of voter bribery however, police officers fired teargas to disperse them and whisked him away in a waiting car.

Muyita says that he won the race but the party’s electoral commission officials instead declared his opponent winner.

“My declaration forms indicate that I won the race with over 9,000 votes but they instead declared Wante, I contest the high levels of impunity exhibited in these NRM primaries,” he says.

Kiwanuka however, dismissed Muyita’s claims arguing that the tally process was free and fair.
