National Team Prepares Ahead of World Cross Country Championships

The national team has today started residential training ahead of the 2023 World Cross country Championships.

The team under the watchful eyes of of coach Benjamin Njia is camping at Trinity Biblical Institute - Kapchorwa.

Njia, also the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) Vice President for Technical says the camp which commenced on Monday will end on February 11 before the team leaves for the World event slated for February 18th in Bathurst, Australia.

He revealed that the team comprises some of the elite athletes like Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Kiplimo and Stella Chesang among others.

"We have started a month earlier to allow the team prepare better," explained Njia during an interview in Kapchorwa.

Uganda's team comprises of 28 athletes (Junior and senior categories) and nine officials.

Francis Demayi who is also part of the coaching team says the team is going to prepare and trained for great performance during the event.

One of the top runners Kiplimo says, residential training for a national team is good because they will plan as a team and not individuals."We are all going to represent our country as a team and that is why training together will yield the best results during the Championship," added Kiplimo.

Apart from Cheptegei and Kiplimo, the rest of the team was selected during the National Cross Country Championships held on December 10th, 2022.

Uganda will face stiff challenge mainly from elite athletes from Kenya and Ethiopia.
