The National Environment Management Authority-NEMA has approved
the Environment and Social Impact Assessment-ESIA report for Tilenga oil
project.
The project is being undertaken by Total E&P Uganda B.V and
Tullow Uganda Operations Limited in Nwoya and Buliisa districts.
The ten years’ validity certificate will allow construction of six oil fields, an industrial area, buried infield
pipes and supporting infrastructures such as camps.
The ESIA report describes the main characteristics of the project,
the potential environmental and social impact. It as well contains the
corresponding mitigation measures that will be implemented to avoid and
minimize potential negative impacts and enhance positive impacts.
The ESIA review process began on 8th June 2018 and included
two public hearings held on 12th and 15th November 2018 at the
project locations of Buliisa and Nwoya districts.
The Total E&P Public Relations Officer, Christopher Ocowun
confirmed that the certificate was awarded Total E&P. He explains that this
is an achievement for necessity for commencing the project as they await the
Final Investment Decision-FID.
The ESIA report was shared with stakeholders, legal fraternities,
and Lead agencies and also shared on publicly to solicit reviews. The ESIA is
to ensure that Total and its partners Tullow and CNOOC operate in a safe and
environmentally friendly manner for current and future generations.
