New Soroti Diocese Bishop Excites Christians

Christians in Soroti Catholic Diocese are excited by the appointment of Reverend Father Joseph Oliach Eciru as the new Bishop of Soroti Diocese.

Eciru’s appointment was announced on Tuesday by Fr. Alfred Rayan D' Souza, the in charge affairs, Apostolic Church Nunciature in Uganda.

The Catholic faithful say that have waited for more than six years for the appointment of a new Bishop.

Vicky Orwanga, the secretary to the Parish Pastoral Council of Immaculate Conception Cathedral said she is happy with the appointment of Eciru and hopes the appointment will bring development to the diocese.

She also says that her prayers for a new Bishop have not been in vain.

David Opio, a Christian at Immaculate Conception Cathedral Parish said he is excited by the appointment because for the last five years the children haven’t received confirmation.

Senior Priest Rev Fr Leonard Elungat expressed his joy that Soroti Catholic Diocese finally has a Bishop who is a born of the area.

While leading a mass at the Cathedral, Archbishop Emmanuel Obbo called for calm among Christians and applauded Pope Francis for electing the first Etesot to lead Soroti Diocese as a Bishop.

The seat of the Bishop in Soroti Diocese fell vacant in 2014 when Pope Francis appointed the then Bishop Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Obbo A.J as the new Archbishop for Tororo Archdiocese.


Bishop-elect Eciru was born on the 11th August 1970 in Gweri Sub County in Soroti district. He went to St. Aloysius Dem Primary School in Ngora, completed S.4 at St. Peter’s Minor Seminary Madera, Soroti and Advanced Level from St Pius X Seminary Nagongera, Tororo. 

He studied at St Thomas Aquinas National Seminary Katigondo, Masaka and theology at St Paul’s National Seminary Kinyamasika in Fort portal and was ordained priest on August 9th 2003 at St Patrick’s Catholic Parish, Madera.

Eciru served as a lecturer at St. Peter’s Minor Seminary and assistant Parish Priest St. Patrick Madera (2003 – 2004), Formator at St. Paul’s Major Seminary, Kinyamasika (2004 -2006), Professor at St. Mary’s National Major Seminary Ggaba 2012 until present.

He holds a licentiate in sacred scripture from Pontifical Biblical Institute, Rome (2006 – 2009) and Doctorate in Biblical Theology from Pontifical Urban University in Rome (2009 – 2012).
