Nigeria has sent six officials and three players ahead of the first international Para-badminton Championship in Africa from April 27-30 in Kampala.

Simon Mugabi, the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA), Chief Executive Officer confirmed to URN on phone on Monday that the Nigerian team arrived early this morning with more officials than players.

The Uganda International Para-badminton Championship will take place at the Sharing Youth Center, Nsambya. Mugabi explained that although the event had been planned for the MTN Arena, Lugogo Sports center, it has been moved to the Sharing Youth Center because the National Council of Sports (NCS) had booked the hall for another function.

“We have invested a lot and convinced the World badminton body that we have what it takes to host this event that has different categories of players,” added Mugabi.

Shaban Nkutu, Chairman of the Association said they were very happy that the Badminton World Federation recognised their efforts in promoting para – badminton. “We shall do everything possible to make sure we have a good tournament,” he added.

Besides the Nigerians, two players from France Stephen Durand and Richard Perot have also arrived in the country. The event will also attract players from India, Poland and hosts Uganda.

Para-badminton was added to the Paralympic Games programme for the 2020 Tokyo Games in the autumn of 2014 by the International Paralympic Committee.
