Residents of Otuke have sternly rejected a government plan to seize 400 acres of land required to establish a stock farm and training wing for Special Forces in the District.

President Yoweri Museveni had in a letter dated February 27, 2012 requested for the land located in Amodonyanga village, Atira Parish for establishing a farm that would keep 200 cattle. The proposed site is located at the border of Lango, Teso and Karamoja sub regions.

This was in response to a request by the district Woman MP, Annet Nyakecho Okwenye, to restock the district. Okwenye had earlier on written to the President confirming availability of the contested land in Olilim Sub County, the basis of which, President Museveni directed the State House comptroller to expedite the process and ensure that the land is fenced off.

But the decision met resistance from both leaders and locals who claimed that the requisition is an attempt by the government to grab their land in the name of stock farming.

Although Okwenye maintains that the project was well intentioned, Quinto Ojok, the Otuke council speaker says the decision has entirely been rejected by the residents. He also described the project as irrelevant.

But Robert Abak, the Resident District Commissioner blamed a section of local leaders for failing to guide residents on the matter prompting their final decision on the matter.
