Lydia Tumushabe, the Rwenzori Regional Police Spokesperson, says the two are wanted in connection to the killing on Sunday, of Erasmus Irumba and Richard Kanyoro, both residents of Butungama Sub County in Ntoroko district.
Two top security officers in Ntoroko district have been arrested on allegations of murder. They are Gerald Atuhairwe, the Ntoroko District Police Commander and Brian Babishanga, the Ntoroko Internal District Security Officer.
The duo was arrested on Sunday and locked up at Fort Portal Police Station under police file number CRB 208/2017.
Lydia Tumushabe, the Rwenzori Regional Police Spokesperson, says the two are wanted in connection to the killing of Erasmus Irumba and Richard Kanyoro, both residents of Butungama Sub County on Saturday.
Circumstances under which Irumba and Kanyoro were shot are still shrouded in controversy.
Earlier, Tumushabe explained that the DPC, DISO and Lt. Col Richard Muhangi, the Commander of the 3rd Mountain Battalion based in Ntoroko district, received information that Irumba and Kanyoro were in possession of firearms and ammunition.
The officers, according to Tumushabe, decided to ambush the suspects who were riding two numberless motorcycles at Butungama trading centre on Saturday evening leading to a shootout in which the suspects were killed.
While as official police reports say they were shot in self defence, however, a security officer who preferred anonymity claims that at the time of the shooting the two were not armed.
The source says that police detectives who rushed to the scene after the shooting found no guns belonging to the suspects but only guns belonging to the DISO and the DPC. The guns were taken to Fort Portal Police Station as exhibits.
Last evening detectives from Kampala arrived in Fort Portal to carry out investigations into the matter.
Lt. Col Muhangi is currently admitted at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital nursing wounds he sustained in the shootout. According to Tumushabe, three other security officers involved in the shooting are also under detention.
They include Luke Dhadalamu, the escort to the DPC, Ivan Bakasaba and Saul Irema Balimpa, both escorts to Lt. Col Muhangi. Tumushabe says investigations into the incident are ongoing.
