Business grinds to a halt in Ntungamo municipality as darkness falls. Despite being elevated to a municipality in 2010, Ntungamo municipality is covered by darkness during the night due to lack of security lighting. As a result, the business community is forced to close business whenever darkness sets in for fear of being targeted by robbers.
Julius Tatwangire, a businessman along Ntungamo -Mirama hills road, says thugs take advantage of darkness to rob residents and business people before vanishing into the nearby Rufuha swamp. He says the absence of street lights in the municipality has been of concern for a very long time, adding that they have decided to wait until the authorities realize need to install the lights.
Jovanis Ankunda is a food vendor along Ntungamo Kabale road. According to Ankunda, some of her customers take the advantage of the darkness to disappear without paying her. In addition to the problem of the customers, Ankunda says it is risky to move in certain places such as Kyamate, Mile two and Kabagyenda in the night.
Darius Kanyonyi, a concerned trader says the absence of the street lights impact heavily on their businesses since they have to close early enough for their own safety.

Jacob Kafureka, the Mayor Ntungamo Municipality, says the absence of street lights is a serious concern to his leadership. According to Kafureka, they have received complaints from remands demanding for the installation of street lights.
Kafureka says they have budgeted Shillings 220 million for installing street lighting this financial year to increase the safety of residents and allow the business community extend the hours of operations.
