The Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party has nominated Makerere University Councillor Doreen Nyanjura as flag bearers for the position of Speaker and DepuKampala Capital City Authority-KCCA.

The November 2019 amendments of the KCCA Act introduce the positions of speakers and deputy speakers at KCCA and the five divisions of Kampala.

In a meeting that ended Thursday at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi, a committee constituted by the party National Executive Committee-NEC Vetted Nyanjura for speaker and Doreen Sabuka for deputy speaker.

The party had scheduled Monday 17th for the NEC to vote the flag bearer. However, the party electoral commission boss Boniface Toterebuka, said that there will be no voting since the two were unopposed.

However, FDC might not be the only candidate from that party to contest for the position of speaker. Abubakar Kawalya, the councillor Lubaga South has showed interest.

Kawalya, despite filling the form on the FDC ticket declined to be nominated on Wednesday.

He says that he will contest even without blessings from his party.

Out of 32 councillors at KCCA, 18 are members of the FDC. However, they have failed to agree on a single candidate.

In December FDC caucus voted for Kawalya in an election that Nyanjura distanced herself from saying caucus had no authority to convene an election.

It is then that FDC opted to take charge of the process something that has not been the practice. Initially, caucus could take decisions on whom to represent the party in any local government election.

Some members of the caucus like Lubaga South's Ismail Ddamba have vowed to reject a candidate imposed on them.

Makindye West Councillor Umar Kajumba Kafeero also says that FDC should not decide for the councillors. He says he is ready to go against the decision of the FDC and vote for a candidate of his choice.
