Nyiragongo Eruption: Residents Secretly Returning to Goma City

Jeanne Nyakase, one of the locals says that she and her three children only went with only the clothes they were wearing because of haste evacuation.
A section of people evacuated from Goma City in North Kivu Democratic Republic of Congo following the volcanic eruptions at Mount Nyiragongo are secretly sneaking back into their homes, according to authorities.

The volcanic eruptions claimed the lives of 32 people and displaced 20,000. The eruption

was followed by repeated tremors shaking the region every 10 to 15 minutes. This prompted DRC government authorities to evacuate, all residents to Sake, approximately 23 kilometers West of Goma.

But Major Guillaume Njike Kaiko, a spokesperson for the crisis commission told our reporter recently that some of the residents have started sneaking to Goma.  Kakio says that some of the locals started returning to Goma secretly on Thursday night. Kaiko says that the return is not authorized by the provincial authority.

He says that while they are waiting for new data, which is being collected by the experts from the Volcanological Observatory of Goma (OVG) on the activity of the Nyiragongo volcano and the degree of seismicity, the danger is still permanent in Goma. He says that authorities are worried of fresh volcanic eruptions.

But, according to local’s testimonies, the bad conditions in Sake like promiscuity, lack of drinking water, and lack of shelter among others are forcing some of their fellows to make a hasty return to Goma.  Jeanne Nyakase, one of the locals says that she and her three children only went with only the clothes they were wearing because of haste evacuation.

Nyakase says that life in Sake is very miserable because they sleep on the floor without beddings. Deograce Bonheur, another resident says that the difficult life they are facing in Sake is putting them

in the uncertainty of living.  Bonheur says that they neither have water nor food.

He says that although the church gave them where to sleep, they were not given food.  Goma lies eight miles from Nyiragongo Mountain. Nyiragongo Mountain is also located about 46 kilometers away from the Uganda-DR Congo border of Bunagana in Kisoro district.

The ash cloud caused by the eruption has closed down airports in Goma and Bukavu and is likely to cause respiratory diseases, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement on Wednesday this week.
