A one and half year old baby has been killed in Pandwong Village, Kitgum town council in what residents suspect to be ritual murder.

Isaac Owach was reportedly murdered on August 9th and the body dumped in a pit latrine, when his mother, Christine Acan had gone to brew local alcohol in the neighboring village.

Acan says she left her son with a maid, who later informed her that the child had gone missing.

Acan explains that at the time of the disappearance, the child was playing with other children in the neighborhood, but later on left the friends and walked back home. She suspects that it was at that point that the child was murdered and dumped in the pit latrine.

Residents mounted a search for the child, with out success.

The following day, they alerted the police, who immediately mobilized and retrieved the body from a pit latrine in the neighborhood.

The officer in charge of crime at Kitgum central police station, Ramadhan Doka confirms the murder. He says as soon as they received the news of the missing child; they mobilized and went to search for the baby. He said after dismantling the pit latrine with the help of the locals, the body was retrieved and a post mortem done.

Doka says the results indicate that the baby was murdered before being thrown into the pit latrine.

Cue in: “a child of one and a half…”

Cue out: “…landing on the suspects”

The crime detective says they have not made any arrests because no suspect has so far been identified. He however notes that the police are receiving clues that may soon lead to the arrest of suspects.

But Doka does not believe it was a ritual murder. He says all the body parts were intact, except the neck that was twisted and broken. He says police is still investigating the motive of the murder

This is the second murder in a space of two weeks. On August 3rd, Samuel Ayilla, a resident of Kitgum Matidi was murdered over suspected land wrangles. He was killed a few days before he was expected to testify in court against some clan members, who were allegedly involved in land grabbing.
