Police in Soroti district have arrested one person for allegedly masterminding murder during the forceful eviction of tenants from a disputed piece of land.
The incident took place about two weeks ago when a group of court bailiffs demolished more than 15 houses from a disputed piece of land adjacent to Soroti University. The land measuring about 10 acres has been at the centre of controversy between the communities of Apuuton village and Soroti University.
Angry community members are reported to have descended on the bailiffs and severely beat them up in protest of the eviction. Two of them were seriously injured and one died on his way to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
Now Police says a man identified as James Okada, a resident of Apuuton village in Arapai Sub County, commanded the brutal assault of one Augustine Wepukhulu, by the irate residents.
East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson Michael Odongo says Okada, who is being held at Soroti Central Police Station was working with a number of other suspects who are still at large.
Last week police also arrested five people including Moses Okedi- the University private guard, Jonathan Mutabali, Isa Mugobi, Peter Mutaki and Juma Mutabali for conducting an illegal eviction of local residents living on the disputed land.
