One person is feared dead as nine others were injured in a road accident that happened near the Masanafu flyover along the Kampala Northern Bypass this morning.

The accident occurred when a truck Registration number UAZ 366G belonging to a road construction rammed into the 14-seater taxi registration number UAM 134Y and hit it from the rear.

Both doors on the left side of the taxi flew open and some passengers were thrown on the wayside, as the Minibus was pushed for more than 10-meters from the accident scene. Bystanders attribute the accident to an error by the truck driver, who they say failed to overtake the taxi from the right-hand side, as the taxi slowed down perhaps to get a passenger.

By the time of filing the story, this morning, the vehicles were still at the scene and the victims rushed to health centres, while police were yet to arrive. Passerby, including boda-boda riders, and residents who came to rescue attempted the arrest of the driver of the truck, by other Sinotruk vehicles from the same company arrived just in time to save him.

A fight ensued and the truck drivers overpowered the rescuers and whisked their colleague away abandoning the accident truck.

The people say they had to pull the conductor of the taxi from under the two vehicles after he was thrown out and although some claimed he was dead, no one could confirm. The people at the scene think the driver of the truck was a young man perhaps with no driving permit, the reason his colleagues fought to take him away.
