Suspected Turkana warrior shot dead a boda- boda cyclist in Kamion Sub County in Kaabong District on Christmas. Daniel Lopeyok was shot along Kalapata- Usake Road while carrying a passenger only identified as Natume to Kamion.

Jaakan Onenchan, the Kidepo Regional Police Commander, says the incident happened in the morning after a botched raid by the assailants in the area. Onenchan explains that the angry assailants waylaid the cyclist and shot him, leaving the passenger and the bike on the road.

Lopeyok is the fifth gunshot victim since the beginning of this month in Kaabong, according to police records. The first incident was recorded on December 3rd where another boda boda rider, identified as Rashid Angella was killed together with his passenger, Lance Corporal, Mohamed Kitawa.

Kitawa, a UPDF Soldier attached to 49th battalion in Kamion was returning home with his wife, Agnes Owiny when they entered a roadblock mounted by armed men. Information obtained from security circles in the district indicates that the assailants still at large shot at the people on the bike and vanished into the bushes.

But the woman survived. Over the weekend, unknown assailants killed another man only identified as Lokarwas at Kalapata. Sources in the district say the assailants were targeting an LDU informer in the area when they bumped into Lokarwas and shot him when he refused to cooperate with them.

According to Onenchan, incidences of illegal arms in the district are still common, especially among the neighboring Turkana pastoralists from Kenya and others from South Sudan. Kaabong sits at the border with Kenya and South Sudan.

In April this year, MPs from Kaabong made a joint appeal to President Yoweri Museveni over insecurity in the district caused by the influx of guns from the neighboring countries. The appeal followed incidences of murder by shooting where a number of residents lost lives.
