Ongwen to Appear Before ICC Pre-Trial Chamber on Monday

During the pre-trial Ongwen will be informed of the charges against him.

Dominic Ongwen, the former commander of the Lord's Resistance Army-LRA is scheduled to appear before Justice Ekaterina Trendafilova in the International Criminal Court pretrial chamber on Monday next week.

 

A statement from the ICC states that, during the appearance the judge will verify the identity of the suspect and the language in which he is able to follow the proceedings.

 

During the pre-trial Ongwen will be informed of the charges against him. The case is filed as The Prosecutor versus Joseph Kony, Vincent Otti, Okot Odhiambo and Dominic Ongwen.

In a statement issued January 21st, the ICC wrote that Dominic Ongwen was the alleged Brigade Commander of the Sinia Brigade of the Lord\'s Resistance Army (LRA).

 

 

It added that on 8 July 2005, ICC Judges issued an arrest warrant against Ongwen for three counts of crimes against humanity (murder; enslavement; inhumane acts of inflicting serious bodily injury and suffering). 

He also faces four counts of war crimes (murder; cruel treatment of civilians; intentionally directing an attack against a civilian population; pillaging) allegedly committed in 2004 within the context of the situation in Uganda.

The court proceedings will take place in ICC court room II and in addition to being attended by Journalists and Members of the diplomatic corps, NGOs and other members of the public wishing to attend, the hearing  will be streamed live to the public.

Dominic Ongwen was transferred to the ICC on 20 January 2015 following his surrender to US troops in Central African Republic about two weeks ago.
