Onyango Heading Straight For CAF Awards In Abuja

Uganda Cranes first choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango will tomorrow fly straight to Nigeria to attend the 2016 Glo-CAF awards.

Onyango will miss the Uganda Cranes international friendly but fly to Nigeria ahead of the Awards to be held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja on Thursday night. “I am looking forward to this function because being nominated as one of Africa's best players is a dream come true,” Onyango told URN on phone.

While the Cranes flew out last Friday to Tunisia for few days of camping ahead of the 2017 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), Onyango remained in Uganda on a special training programme. He will connect to United Arab Emirates to join the Cranes for eight days of camping and two international friendly matches between Slovakia and Ivory Coast.

Besides helping Uganda Cranes qualify for the 2017 Afcon, Onyango also helped his South African based club Mamelodi Sundowns win the CAF Champions League. The other African players nominated alongside Onyango include teammate Khama Billiat and Zambia's Rainford Kalaba who helped TP Mazambe win the CAF Confederations Cup.

According to the organisers the awards gala will also congregate African football legends, including the new African Footballer of the Year and winners in 12 other categories. The categories include African Player of The Year (Based in Africa), National Team of The Year, Club of The Year, and Coach of The Year.

The remaining categories are Women's National Team of The Year, Women's Footballer of The Year, Most Promising Talent, Referee of The Year, Legend of The year, Fair Play Award, Platinum Award – Single nominee, and Africa Finest XI.

Gabon and Borrussia Dortmund FC of Germany's striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who is also nominated for the African Player of the Year Award (Foreign based) is the current African player of the Year, while Tanzania's Mbwana Ally Samatta is the African Player of the Year, based in Africa.
