Residents of Bukalu and Nabongo sub-counties in Bulambuli district are worried over the open murram ditches in the area.

The affected villages include Bunamune, Bunamwambu in Bumasoko and Bunangaka parishes respectively in Nabongo Sub County.

The ditches that were used to extract murram by road construction companies since 1998 have turned into man-made lakes in the area.   They are also breeding places for mosquitoes and a death trap to residents, especially children.

When it rains, water flows into people’s houses and gardens destroying crops and merchandise. The roads in the area are also cut off by the floods.

Zuena Baluka, a resident living adjacent to one of the ditches says that her house has developed cracks. She says that the ditches are making the area not conducive for her five children.

Nathan Welishe, the LC II Bunankaga parish says that three people has fallen into the ditches and drowned.

Margret Mutonyi, the councillor representing Nabongo Sub County says that people have been affected with diseases like malaria as a result of the ditches.

Innocent Wandabwa, the Bulambuli district Environment Officer says that the miners don’t consult his office on the guidelines on how to extract murram.

He said that some miners manipulate the leaders and pay them insufficient money to allow them carry out the mining and go without refilling the pits.

“The problem is that the miners don’t want to come to my office for mining guidelines because they know I will tell them to refill the pits so they use the local leaders in the area to do their activities,” he says.
