OPM Stops Distribution of Relief Food to Bulambuli Landslide Victims

Rose Nakabugo, the Commissioner Disaster Preparedness in OPM, told journalists on Wednesday during a multi-sector meeting held at the resettlement camp that there has been progress in the camp where beneficiaries of the first phase have grown food and can now sustain themselves.

The Office of the Prime Minister has stopped distribution of relief food to the first group of beneficiaries who were affected by in Bunambuteye Sub County, Bulambuli District.    

Under the first phase, 97 families were relocated and resettled in the camp in May last year.  Each household was given food and 100,000 Shillings to each household, piped water and power among other things.     

Rose Nakabugo, the Commissioner Disaster Preparedness in OPM, said on Wednesday during a multi-sector meeting held at the resettlement camp that since there has been progress in the camp where beneficiaries of the first phase have grown food, they can now sustain themselves.

Nakabugo said that households in the second phase will continue to be supported since they received the planting space and the materials late.

Siraji Wamai, the Bulambuli LCV Chairperson says that he is optimistic that the beneficiaries in the first phase will be able to sustain themselves because they got good yields in the previous season. He, however, said that people are still facing a challenge of inadequate water supply in the camp.

Rehema Mulono, one of the residents in the camp, raised concerns about the withdrawal of relief food since they were allocated planting space late. She said that they had requested the officials to continue supporting the households until the end of the planting season.

Meanwhile, the construction of Bunambutye Camp Primary School is also expected to be completed by the end of this month.
