Political activists in Masaka district have appealed to opposition Members of Parliament to champion the enactment of stringent laws to address rigging in the country.

Led by Joseph Kasirye, the National Unity Platform registrar for Masaka City, the activists who include members of two other opposition parties; the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC and Democratic Party-DP, argue that the current electoral laws are still weak to stop vote-rigging.

Kasirye says it is high time parliament considered an audit of the election results at the constituency level, to avoid the possibility of transmitting doctored results to the national tally center that could affect the final results.

According to Kasirye, their analysis of this year’s general election exposed glaring discrepancies between the numbers of votes on the declaration of results forms and the Electoral Commission tally sheet, arguing that such errors are enough to discredit the election process.

He argues that the law in its current form does not put in place strict links between the declaration of results forms used to records election returns and voter bio-metric machines used at each polling station, which leaves room for cheating.

However, Oscar Kihika the Director of Legal Services in the ruling National Resistance Movement-NRM party who was a lead Defense lawyer for Yoweri Museveni Tibuhaburwa in the 2021 Presidential Elections Petition, criticized the National Unity Platform for withdrawing the petition from the Supreme Court, indicating that it denied the country legal reforms that would arise out of it.
