Otafiire Seeks Court Orders to Block Rival\'s Nomination

In a supporting affidavit to the petition, Otafiire contends that he will suffer irreparable damage in the event that the NRM party proceeds to front Kahonda as its flag bearer and is nominated in the face of the mentioned illegalities.
Major General Kahinda Otafiire, the incumbent Ruhinda County Member of Parliament has petitioned Mbarara High court to block the nomination of his rival Retired Captain Donanzio Mugabe Kahonda. Otafiire contested in the NRM primaries for election as the NRM candidate for Ruhinda county MP seat and lost to Kahonda.

However, Otafiire is seeking for interim court orders restraining the NRM party Electoral Commission from presenting Retired Captain Donanzio Mugabe Kahonda as Ruhinda County NRM parliamentary candidate. Through his lawyer Alex Bashasha of Bashasha and company Advocates, Otafiire also wants court to stop Kahonda from participating in the 2016 general elections as NRM parliamentary candidate until his main petition is heard and determined.

According to Otafiire, the NRM party primaries in Ruhinda County in Mitooma district were marred by irregularities and malpractices.  He accuses the NRM party Electoral Commission for ignoring complaints raised by his agents during the primaries. In a supporting affidavit to the petition, Otafiire contends that he will suffer irreparable damage in the event that the NRM party proceeds to front Kahonda as its flag bearer and is nominated in the face of the mentioned illegalities.

He also contends that Kahonda doesn\'t qualify to be nominated as a parliamentary candidate since has never obtained the requisite advanced level academic qualifications or its equivalent. Kahonda has confirmed receiving Mbabazi's petition. He however, denies any involvement in the electoral malpractice saying he was detained in Kirinya Prison in Jinja when the elections took place.
