Dr. Olara Otunnu, the Uganda People's Congress-UPC party president says he will hand over the party leadership to his vice president, Joseph Bbosa by 1st July this year.

According to Otunnu, his earlier plans to vacate the party leadership were sabotaged by the unholy alliance between the Jimmy Akena faction and President Yoweri Museveni, which is now clear for all to see.

Otunnu says that since the general elections, which had preoccupied the political space for several months are over, it is critical that the responsible stake holders in the party assume their respective responsibilities and address the issues at hand and install a new party leadership.

He also claimed that party cabinet had convened the National council between 6-7 May 2016 for him to hand over but the meeting was blocked by police, which compelled him to make unplanned adjustments to carry on with the leadership well beyond the time he had planned.

Otunnu declined to take questions from journalist and instead handed copies of his press statement to Bbosa to translate in Luganda. In his statement, Bbosa said he was ready to assume the responsibility conferred upon him by the outgoing party president.
