Over 90 Arrested In Crackdown on Bars In Busia

Moses Kakiryo, the Busia District Police Commander-DPC says that they conducted operations for two days in different bars targeting bars operating in disregard of the suspension by the president as part of the measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Busia police are holding more than 95 people for violating the suspension on social gatherings. The suspects were rounded up in bars where they found drinking behind closed doors.

 

The suspects were picked up from places such as Embassy pub, Galaxy Lodge and bar and Hyper Lodge among others. Moses Kakiryo, the Busia District Police Commander-DPC says that they conducted operations for two days in different bars targeting bars operating in disregard of the suspension by the president as part of the measures to contain the spread of COVID-19.

He says that the suspects include revellers, who were found drinking and bar operators.

Joseph Ojambo, a resident of Busia town, says the decision of the bar operators to open illegally poses a risk to residents since it increases the chances of spreading coronavirus in the area since they attract revellers from neighbouring Kenya where coronavirus cases are high.

Mathew Tusubira, the Busia Deputy Resident District Commissioner, says that the bar owners have developed escape routes for their clients.

Some of the suspects were are locked up at Busia central police station while others are being held at  Dabani Sub-county police station waiting to appear before the magistrate’s court.

During his televised address last week, Museveni maintained the closure of bars, saying a critical percentage of the population isn’t yet vaccinated.
