Pastor In Trouble For Threatening Violence

Benjamin Oteka, one of the senior pastors at Faith Centre Cathedral in Gulu municipality is facing trial for threatening violence against his estranged American wife, Carole Ward. Details of the case are that on that on August 9, 2013 while at Acholi Inn garden in Gulu town, Oteka threatened to harm Ward.

Prosecution led by told court mid this week that on the fateful day, Oteka turned violent and attempted to assault Carole in the presence of their family friends. Keith Hoggins of Our Call Missions, a faith based organization testified against Otekat before court.

Ward was expected to appear in court on Tuesday this week to testify against Otekat. However, Bayo notified court that Ward had undergone surgery on June 14, 2016 at a US hospital and presented a medical report to that effect. Otekat denies the accusations leveled against him. His lawyer, Charles Dalton Opwonya also complains that the matter has dragged on for long.

He told the Gulu Chief Magistrate, Deogratius Ssejemba on Tuesday, that the state has failed to gather his witnesses. Opwonya noted that since the trial began more than a year ago, only four witnesses have testified so far. Opwonya asked court to compel the state to present the remaining two witnesses to allow court to conclude the matter.

The magistrate adjourned the matter to September 21 to allow the complainant to appear before court. Otekat and Ward broke up after staying in marriage for less than four years and have since filed for divorce before Gulu High court.  

The couple also co-owned Favor of God Ministries, a local NGO which supports Orphans and vulnerable children in Northern Uganda. He was dragged before the Anti-corruption court by Ward for allegedly embezzling over US$ 100,000 (around UGX 353.6M) meant for the NGO.
