The Member of Parliament for Pian County in Nakapiripirit district, Remegio Achia, has spent his entire day locked up at Jinja road police station for drink driving.

Achia was booked into the police cells on Monday shortly after the car he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle at Banda, a Kampala suburb.

Attempts by Achia’s friends to get him police bond failed after the Kampala Metropolitan Traffic boss, Lawrence Niwabine refused to grant him bond. Recently, the traffic police were forced to scale down on their drink driving operations following complaints that the offenders were being forced to 'buy' their freedom or be locked up in police cells to sober up. In one such operation early this year, Rwampara County MP Vincent Kyamadidi was accused by some police officers of trying to pee on them under the influence of alcohol.

On Monday evening, while driving from the direction of Jinja in a Land Cruiser registration number UAA 028D, Achia tried to overtake another car but ended up having a head-on collision with another vehicle registration number UAA 957W, which was moving from Kampala towards Jinja.

Police were called to the scene and the MP was found to be drunk.

Achia was arrested and taken to Jinja road police where he spent the night.

Police Deputy Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango confirmed Achia’s arrest saying he would be charged with careless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Cue out: …Nakawa court.”//

According to Onyango, Achia could have ended his life if police had not moved to restrain him by putting him in custody. Nobody died in the accident.
