On Thursday February 16, Ugandan Christians commemorated the 40th anniversary since the martyrdom of the third Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Janani Luwum at a colorful ceremony in Mucwini Sub-County Kitgum district.

Thousands of Christians flocked the area to pray and witness activities organized in memory of one of the few 20th century Christian martyrs.

The celebration was also graced with several performances from choral music, traditional Acholi Bwola dances, and contemporary performances by local artists that followed after the celebration of service led by the Most Rev. Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Stanley Ntagali.

The Catholic Church was represented by the Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese John Baptist Odama. Mary Luwum the widow of the late archbishop and her children were also present among other key guests.

Notable memorial events at the celebration was the unveiling of a master plan for the development of the burial site of the saint into a modern, yet African themed pilgrimage and prayer memorial which was flagged of with the planting of a ‘Unity Tree'.
