Cheers as the buses carrying the freed royal guards enter Booma grounds
Thousands of people gathered at Rwenzori Square in Kasese town on Thursday to enthusiastically welcome the freed royal guards. These guards, along with the Rwenzuru cultural leader Charles Wesley Mumbere, had been facing serious charges such as treason, terrorism, murder, attempted murder, and aggravated robbery.

In a letter received by Lady Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Jane Frances Abodo, stated that the state had lost interest in pursuing the cases against them. Amnesty was granted to the accused and suspects who applied to the Amnesty Commission, admitting their mistakes.

However, charges are still being pursued against Thembo Kitsumbire, the former Rwenzururu Prime Minister, and Masereka Kamada, who maintain their innocence. King Mumbere, after spending most of the past eight years on bail with restricted movement limited to Kampala city, is now free to travel anywhere. The celebrations marking their release were captured in pictures by a reporter from URN (Uganda Radio Network).
