July 1 seven municipalities in Uganda attained city status. They include Arua,
Gulu, Jinja, Mbarara, Fort Portal, Masaka and Mbale.
This is after Parliament approved the creation of 15 new cities
across the country. The approved cities will come into effect in a phased
manner starting 1st July 2020 to July 2023. Hoima, Lira and Soroti Cities
will come into effect on 1st July 2021.
Wednesday, the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga and the Local Government Minister,
Raphael Magyezi launched the operationalization of the cities in Jinja.
