Pictorial: Oulanyah’s Body Arrives at Parliament Amidst Colour and Pomp

The casket containing the remains of the fallen Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah arrived in Parliament on Tuesday amidst colour and pomp.  Acholi Bwola dancers received the hearse carrying the body along parliament avenue.

At the main gate of Parliament, bikers led the convey and later the Speaker, Anita Among Annet, accompanied by her Deputy Thomas Tayebwa, other legislators and staff of Parliament received the body on the step of the house.

A long red carpet stretching over 80 meters running from the lobby through the parking yard to the main gate was laid to welcome Oulanyah's lifeless body. The lobby walls were decorated with the national colours black, yellow and red-colour apparel. 

Right from the parking yard up to the lobby stretching to the chambers of Parliament, red and yellow petals littered the floor of the House in an apparent show of love to the former head of the Institution.

Several legislators and staff of the Parliament were clad in black and white suits with bowties. Oulanyah, 56, who represented Omoro County, died in a hospital in Seattle, the United States of America on March 20, 2022. He was indisposed since February 4th after being referred overseas by the Mulago Cancer Institute for specialized treatment.  

The government repatriated his body from the US on Friday, April 1st, 2022.  The body spent a night at the Mortuary in Mengo before being transferred to his residence in Muyenga on Sunday. The body will lay in state in parliament before being taken to Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for a national vigil on Wednesday.

Several Ministers, ex-ministers, former legislators and a delegation of mourners from the East African Legislative Assembly as well as representatives from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo – DRC, paid tribute to the former Speaker. The remains will be laid to rest in his ancestral Ayomlony village, Lalogi Sub-County in Omoro District on Friday 8, 2022.
