Hundreds of Christians thronged St Paul Church of Uganda in Wii-gweng village, Mucwini Sub-county in Kitgum District this morning to commemorate the 44th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Janani Luwum, the former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda.  Luwum’s remains were buried at St Paul Church of Uganda Wii-gweng.

The memorial prayer was organized by the local organizing committee in Kitgum District and was presided over by the former Northern Uganda Diocese Bishops, Rt. Rev Nelson Onono-onweng and Benoni Ogwal Abwang. It attracted young and old Christians from within and outside Kitgum district.

The former Bishop of Kitgum Diocese Bishop Rt. Rev Macleod Baker Ochola, the leader of Opposition in Parliament and Gulu District Woman Member of Parliament Betty Aol also attended the prayers. In his sermon, Bishop Ogwal reminded Christians to emulate St. Janani Luwum for his good deeds in speaking the truth without fear.

He also noted that without the guidance of Luwum, whom he met in 1959, he wouldn’t have been strong in his faith. St Janani Luwum was martyred on February 16, 1977, in Kampala during the reign of former Uganda, President Idi Amin.
