A vibrant gathering of fervent Christians converged at Our Lady of Good Shepherd, Rushoroza Cathedral Parish in Kabale Diocese on Sunday, commemorating a century dedicated to advancing the Catholic faith in the Kigezi region.

Founded in November 1923 by Henri Streicher, this cathedral stands as the inaugural Catholic Cathedral in Kigezi. Streicher, the then Catholic Missionary Bishop overseeing the Rwenzori Vicariate (now Mbarara Archdiocese), proclaimed its establishment as a means to extend the Gospel of God closer to the local communities. In 1909, Bishop Streicher dispatched Yohana Ssebalija, followed by Yohana Kitagana in 1911, as the pioneering catechists in Kigezi.

Calistus Rubaramira, Bishop of Kabale Diocese, affirmed that Kitagana initially served in Nyarushanje (now Nyarushanje sub-county in Rukungiri district) before establishing the Christian community of Rushoroza in Kabale. Assisted by Athanase Nalugumbula and a dedicated team of catechists, Kitagana laid the foundation.

In the same year, 1923, the Missionaries of Africa—Fathers Laane and Nicolet and Brother Theophile—arrived at Rushoroza to provide invaluable religious support. Since its inception, the parish has played a pivotal role in establishing 38 parishes across the districts of Kabale, Rubanda, Kisoro, Kanungu, Rukungiri, and Rukiga. Our reporter brings you a visual representation of the memorable celebration.
